Unmissable UNESCO-heritage day trips you should do from Opatija
Holidaying in Opatija provides you with the opportunity for some unmissable day trips.
One of the many advantages of Opatija is its great location, so that within just two hours’ drive there are as many as four sites protected by the UNESCO World Heritage List to be visited.
Venice (Italy)
First on the list is certainly the magnificent Venice, which takes just over two hours by car. Visit the numerous cultural monuments and world-renowned masterpieces.
Be sure not to miss one of the world’s most beautiful squares, take a gondola ride, enjoy an espresso at the oldest coffee house in the world and see the unique work of Murano glass makers.
Postojna Cave
What you should not miss during your stay in Opatija is the Postojna Cave – the largest and most visited karst cave in Europe – only an hour’s drive away.
The mysterious, underground world of the cave system, as explored until now, is a staggering length of 21 kilometres! Enjoy a train ride through the unique landscape of the decorative cave walls, breathtaking halls and remarkable stalactites and stalagmites.
At the cave’s entrance is the beautiful Predjama castle, and 40 kilometres away is Slovenia’s capital, the picturesque Ljubljana.
Plitvice Lakes
A visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park should not be missed. The oldest Croatian national park on the UNESCO World Heritage List has been around since 1979, and consists of 16 vibrantly-coloured lakes connected by waterfalls that extend to the natural greenery of the canyon.
Enjoy nature’s special magical power as you walk the trails that wind around and across the lakes and waterfalls. This unique pearl is around two hours away from Opatija.
Poreč
In the beautiful Istrian town of Poreč, under an hour’s drive from Opatija, is one of the most beautifully preserved monuments of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean – the Euphrasian Basilica.
Built in the 6th century on the foundations of an earlier Christian church, it owes its current shape to Bishop Euphrasius and the Emperor Justinian.
The Basilica is located in the Episcopal complex and has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
